Our Community
We are a dynamic community of God’s people from a variety of vocations, locations, churches, languages and cultures. Enrolling in a course of study involves a commitment to personal development through study and fellowship with others who share a common goal: being equipped to undertake ministry opportunities in all walks of life.
Our staff and students are committed to building and blessing each other and the wider body of faith. Community on campus is experienced in the way our students and staff relate to each other, and is a vital component of the Spirit’s work of developing Christ’s character in us. Choices regarding personal freedoms and regulations are made keeping in mind other individuals and the entire Institute community.
Prayer is fundamental to the Christian life, and students are encouraged to set aside a time each day for personal prayer and reflection. There are also opportunities for spiritual fellowship on campus. During semester the Institute family meets every Wednesday for The Gathering, an opportunity to worship together and minister to each other. Other times are set aside for small group ministry and individual Departments meets regularly for chapel. A spiritual retreat is held off campus every year and is always a special weekend for students, staff and their families. We anticipate all students will take full advantage of these times of fellowship.
Our students are encouraged to join a local church community. Wesley Mission (the parent body of the Institute) offers a number of different worship styles and extends an open invitation to students who do not have a church home in Sydney. There are 45 worship services to choose from with a diversity of congregations. The special work done by the Mission in Sydney shows the compassion of Christ for all members of the community. The Mission is very supportive of Wesley Institute and during the academic year there are a number of occasions when we worship together with the Mission congregations. Students and staff all participate in these special events.
Personal relationships are both enriching and demanding, and student interactions will demonstrate both maturity and respect for one another. Christ is the role model in all our relationships. As a Christian community we are committed to the highest codes of ethical conduct and sexual morality both on and off campus.
Our staff and students will dress neatly and modestly, in a manner appropriate to safety regulations. Different facilities and curricula requirements will dictate the choice of clothing, particularly in the performing and visual arts, and students are expected to observe all directives regarding these matters. For example, shoes must be worn on campus. Further information about occupational health and safety legislation is available from www.austlii.edu.au

Language plays a significant role in forming attitudes, perceptions of others and ways of relating. We expect all students and staff to be aware of the way they use language, in both written and oral presentations. Any reference to ethnic, racial, cultural or religious groups, social categories, gender, particular jobs or institutions should always show sensitivity and respect. Staff and students are encouraged to use language which is non sexist in nature.
