Paul Cutlan
Jazz Clarinet
Paul Cutlan's career as a versatile multi-instrumentalist spans many
different styles encompassing contemporary classical music, world music
and jazz. Majoring in clarinet and composition, he graduated from the
Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music in 1987 with Honours in Composition.
After freelancing with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Paul moved to
Sydney in 1989, where he worked with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and
the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.
In 1997 Paul joined
world/jazz group MARA! with whom he has been on five European/ North
American and numerous Asian tours. He has recorded two CDs with MARA!
including the ARIA winning album Live in Europe.
Paul is a member of the Australian Art Orchestra, having recorded three albums.
Since
1997 Cutlan has led the group Coltrane Project, which has been recorded
frequently by the ABC. He is a member of the innovative ensemble Gest8,
which had its debut at the Jazz Now Festival at the Sydney Opera House
Studio in August 2004.
In 2003 he composed the music for and
performed in the acclaimed theatre production Birth of the Cool for the
Sydney Festival. A unique combination of narrative, performance poetry,
programme music and jazz, it celebrates the lives and poetry of the
“Beat Generation” of American poets of the 1940s and ‘50s.
In
2007, Cutlan led a trio at the Paris quartier d’été and co-produced the
duo album Simpatico with fellow saxophonist Andrew Robson. From 2009 he
has increasingly been performing seasons of stages shows including Guys
and Dolls at the Capitol, the acclaimed production of the Beatle’s
White Album at the Opera House and stage musical Wicked. Paul has
performed at major national jazz festivals with the Craig Scott Quintet
and toured his own Sydney Jazz Trio to Tasmania and around NSW.
Paul is currently undertaking a Master of Music (Composition) at Sydney Conservatorium.
