Dance Movement Therapy

Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) uses dance and movement “…as a process which furthers the emotional, cognitive and physical integration of an individual” (American Dance Therapy Association). Dance Movement Therapy is the primary means to address emotional issues and increase emotional and physical health with a wide variety of clients. Dance movement therapists work in such areas as hospitals, nursing homes, counselling centres, schools and agencies for disabilities.

Graduate Diploma of Dance Movement Therapy

The Graduate Diploma of Dance Movement Therapy is a specialist qualification that is designed to provide professional training delivered by highly qualified people in the fields of counselling, dance movement therapy, and dance. The Graduate Diploma of Dance Movement Therapy course structure encompasses various theoretical models and approaches, evidence-based interventions including counselling and assessment skills, dance movement therapy skills and techniques, ethical and legal processes, and practical experience with different client populations.

Students are encouraged to join the Dance Movement Therapy Association of Australia (www.dtaa.org.au) at an associate/student level, thereby becoming actively involved in the peer and academic learning opportunities offered with such membership. During training all students will be required to undertake a personal experience of therapy with an experienced counsellor or dance movement therapist, within or outside the Institute. This experience, in conjunction with quality academic training and closely supervised practice, will enable students to become appropriately self-reflective and analytical of their own work with clients.

Katrina Carter

"My time at Wesley Institute has been pretty amazing and I feel like I’ve been equipped to serve God through the arts in a professional, educated and faith filled way. I made really strong friendships with other students at the college and some of those friendships have seen me through the last few years. Doing the education course the past year has also been quite different, studying by correspondence, but really satisfying and now I’m actually working full time as a teacher, teaching dance and also creative arts. Wesley has definitely set me up for my career and also with friendships and faith for life."
