Sarah Frost’s Career Heats Up. Dramatically!

27 January 2009

What’s life like in the post-Wesley world? For drama graduate Sarah Frost, it’s been a full, fun, and often challenging journey, juggling marriage and two children while acting, writing, and more recently, directing and producing her own short films.

Graduating from Wesley Institute with a Bachelor of Creative Art (Drama) in 2000, Sarah’s acting career began with children’s entertainment, TVC’s, performing her one-woman show Stepping Stones at Black Stump Arts Festival and corporate events, and acting in a channel TVS comedy series. However, it wasn’t long before her versatility as an artist opened up further opportunities.

“In 2005 I was approached to write This Bloke Called Jesus for Wesley Institute and I tentatively took it on. As I saw it come to life I realised I had something more to offer as an artist. This led me to write my first short film, an experience which has drawn me further into the filmmaking world, opening my understanding to all of its facets. I am now skilled as a writer, editor, producer, storyboards artist, designer and director, all of which help me as an actor.” This Bloke Called Jesus was Wesley Institute’s popular 2006 Easter production, and Sarah’s role in Jewel won her ‘Best Actress’ at the 2007 Ignite Film Festival.

Other recent acting highlights have been performing at Sydney Town Hall for the Bible Society’s Celebration of Word and Song, and playing a bit part in the Oscar nominated short film The Saviour (2007).

Sarah says that her experience at Wesley Institute has been integral in her journey as an artist, especially the post-graduation support and the community of artists.  “I have developed very strong professional links with alumni and staff with whom I will continue to collaborate when creating my projects.”

Sarah’s production company, HotFrost, is set to release her latest short film, TXT (currently in post-production). “With HotFrost I want to tell stories… reveal the heart of God where I can. To entertain. To depict spiritual truths.”

Any advice for our students who are just negotiating post-Wesley life for themselves?

“My philosophy has always been, ‘I don’t want to wake up at 45 and say, oh yeah, I had a dream once...what ever happened to that?' You’ve got to keep walking forward, even if it takes 5, 10, 15 years. Life as an actor in Sydney has been a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, slow times and fast times, hopes and disappointments. I have had plenty of opportunities to give up, but for some reason I don’t have a plan B."

Her passion for her art speaks for itself. We’re proud of Sarah and her achievements so far, and look forward to more projects in the future!
