From Wesley Institute to Las Vegas

25 February 2009

Landing a gig as Assistant Stage Manager has been just one of Elizabeth Rogers’ latest achievements. Although only having recently graduated from her Bachelor of Creative Arts (Theatre Production) course, she’s had the opportunity to work with such industry production professionals as Nigel Levings (lighting designer), Frank Harlow (Production Manager), and Laura Watson (Production Stage Manager)  the 2008 Sydney musical Las Vegas Confidential.

Her demanding six day a week schedule required setting up the Fox Studios rehearsal room; maintaining schedules; working with actors, dancers, choreographers and director; and finding and maintaining props for scene work. For one memorable week, Elizabeth also had to stand in as Company Stage Manager and Deputy Stage Manager. Not to mention all the late nights at State Theatre during the show’s actual run!

Elizabeth says her experiences at Wesley Institute prepared her to cope with the rigours of the show. “Wesley gave me such a good variety of shows to work on with some amazing mentors, which built in me a solid platform of experience with which to fall back on when situations on Las Vegas became quite topsy-turvy. If I hadn't worked on shows with all those responsibilities before, I wouldn’t have been able to handle it.”

Elizabeth counts the show as a fantastic learning experience, especially in regards to communication and team dynamics. “I learned that for a show to be successful, every department must work to their utmost with the rest of the team in maintaining communication, listening to each other, and finding suitable creative compromises for the greater good of the story.”

Following Las Vegas Confidential, Elizabeth's reputation earned her another gig – touring interstate from March to June as Stage Manager for SCOOBY-DOO IN STAGEFRIGHT - Live On Stage!
