Twisted Tree Theatre

Alumni theatre company at Wesley Institute

It has been just under 2 years since the debut of Twisted Tree Theatre where the company premiered with Peter Shaffer’s, The Private Ear in 2009. Since then, Twisted Tree has continued to grow and produce outstanding theatrical work.

Twisted Tree’s 2011 season has been incredible. Twisted Tree commenced the year in February with William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. With a cast and crew of 17 and 1 of 6 shows sold out, Hamlet received many positive responses from its audiences.

Graduates Scott Parker, Benjamin Vickers, Nicholas O’Regan and current Wesley Institute students, Robert Den Engelsman & Andrew Bollom devised their own sketch, Commedia Della Scorreggia, for the Sydney 2011 Short + Sweet Festival. Amongst many other talented works at the festival, the group proceeded through the heats into the Gala Finals in March at the NIDA Parade Theatres where they took home “Best Independent Theatre Company – Twisted Tree Theatre”. The company couldn’t be happier for the success.

August saw the revisiting of the 2007’s Wesley Institute Drama Graduating Show Shakespeare’s R&J. The cast consisted of 3 of the original 4, Adam Dowell, Luke Edwards and Benjamin Vickers, along with 1 recent graduate; James Jonathon. Actor Luke Edwards said it “was the best show I have ever been in,” with Dr. Greg Rough, Wesley Institute's Managing Director, saying, “The boys should very proud.”

Twisted Tree will be concluding the 2011 season with another classic, Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. A comedy full of love, wit and wonderful characters, it certainly is a play many critics consider “Oscar Wilde’s greatest comedy.” Katherine Hopwood-Poulsen couldn’t be more thrilled to make her directorial debut of Twisted Tree Theatre.

 Our Alumni Say...

Hailey McQueen

‘In an industry flooded with talent and very few jobs to go around, it’s essential that artists take initiative and create their own work. Twisted Tree Theatre is a prime example of this: Alumni working together to create their own opportunities. I believe in Twisted Tree Theatre because it acts as a vital vessel for performers, designers and production crew allowing Wesley Institute graduates a place to hone skills, gain experience and grow a community of like-minded artists who are hungry for success and influence.’

 Sarah Farmer
‘So many dreams and passions go unrealised due to limited opportunities. This can especially be said of the world of theatre in Australia. Twisted Tree Theatre offers the talented Alumni endless opportunities to be involved in what they are most passionate and gifted in. I believe firmly that in order to keep and to grow in any career and especially in Acting, practice is certainly key to achieving success. I believe in Twisted Tree because it is a wonderful community as well as being a fast developing professional playground for me and my fellow Alumni to do and to grow in, what we love!’

James Jonathan

"During my studies at Wesley Institute I developed strong relationships with the students and lecturers on a social and professional level. Having the opportunity to work again with these people after graduation is truly amazing. Throughout any actors' career you will experience working with all sorts of cast and crew and develop many bonds along the way. Some may be good experiences and others not so memorable but at Twisted Tree Theatre, alumni students enter a place where the chemistry between the cast and crew is already there which allows us to pour our heart, mind, body and soul into the productions we produce."

-James Jonathon-
